Hi, I wonder and buy a 1998 model MK4 with 2jz gte vvti twin turbo engine, it is automatic. What is the difference between this engine and regular 2jz gte? Is this engine better? Some weaknesses with it? Are there any other difference between a car with automatic, think of diff etc.

if you search here you will find everything you need. btw there is no weakness ,just the addition of vvti on the intake cam and the smart throttle control which equates to more power on any rpm

The vvti 2jzgte and non-vvti are internally identical from the head down. The vvti engines have been proven to produce more power at lower RPMS, however the trade off is that parts for them (cams for one) are much more expensive and rare. As for them being cheaper it just depends where you go.

People usually don't go with vvti because it is a little more complicated to tune and parts for he motor are not easily accessible because that motor came only in the Jdm market

So the shorts blocks for non and vvti are identical?
I think I read somewhere the rods in the vvti are weaker?

Good grief. Only the GE engine got different rods when it went vvti. The 2JZ-GTE rods never changed.

JDM TT's (non & vvt-i) have ceramic internals (spool faster but are more fragile) and if staying BPU the first cat is different. I think I am also right in saying the VVTi engines have oil squirters as well.
They use 3 coil packs instead of 6, the OEM intake plenum is smaller when compared to the non vvt-i.
If going with a modern aftermarket ECU you can go true DBW and ditch that awful expensive to fix (when it goes wrong) hybrid TB that the vvt-i engines use.
Regarding cams, just go HKS and you will be fine.
